Even as little as 10 years ago, putting a website together was a pretty
complicated thing to do as we struggled with the intricacies of HTML and the
newly emerging Java, while our primitive (by today's standards) editing
software crashed relentlessly whilst allowing graphics and words to jump all
around the page as they wished! And that was after we had persuaded our latest
copy of Windows 3.1 tostop the dreaded GPF (General Protection Fault) from
closing down the whole system for the 23rd time that day. But then progress
came! Computers became faster and more powerful, operating systems improved
and some pretty good programmes were brought out which could design and create
a whole website for us, complete with a whole libraries all copyright free
graphics, within little more than a few minutes. A new generation of computer
savvy children was growing up too; one of the first things they learned at
school was the dark mystery called HTML and before we knew where we were kids
at primary school were designing their own websites, and not doing a terribly
bad job of it either! Looking for

a website? Well the simple fact is that a website is a lot more than just a
collection of graphics and text! Every website is designed to achieve at least
one purpose, whether that purpose is to sell a product or to sell an idea and
that site is in competition with millions of others on the Internet, the
majority of which will probably never be seen by anyone other than the people
who designed them! In order to stand out from the crowd a site has to be
attractively designed, with unique and relevant graphical elements; and the
text has to be written not only in order to achieve its purpose, but also to
fit in with the demands of the major search engines, since otherwise it will
never appear in any searches. A competent website designer is, therefore, not
only an artist who can create a visual media which is attractive and which
instilled confidence in the surfer, not only a publicist who knows how to
attract that surfer's attention in the first place, but also an excellent
sales person who can put over a convincing message, and persuade the reader
that what has been written is important and worth acting on or remembering.
And that is before we even think about the black art of search engine
